Union displays rare bibles and psalters from guest lecturer’s private collection

JACKSON, Tenn. – May 15, 2009 - Rare collectible bibles and artifact psalters, some over 470 years old, were on display at Union University as part of the current semester long Psalms Project. Michael Morgan, musician for Columbia Theological Seminary, displayed several items from his private collection which contains over 3400 total volumes. Of particular interest was an original first edition 1611 King James Bible.

In addition to displaying his collection Morgan also gave a lecture on the history and practice of congregational psalm singing. The lecture was held in the Grant Events Center and was sponsored by Union University’s Psalms Project which has been funded by the Calvin Worship Institute in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Mark Dubis, Associate Professor of Christians Studies at Union University said, “Michael Morgan is both a gifted musician and someone with a vast knowledge of the history of the use of Psalms in worship. Although the singing of Psalms is lost to some Christian traditions, Morgan inspired us to recover this treasure in our worship, reminding us that the Church has a long tradition of contemporizing the Psalms so that they may speak afresh to new generations.”

During his visit to Union Morgan also served as guest lecturer in the English Department’s “History of the English Language” class taught by Gavin Richardson and in the Music Department’s “Hymnology” class taught by Michael Penny.

Morgan is an expert in the history and literature of the English Bible, Psalms, and liturgies of the English Church. His personal library of English Bibles, Testaments, Psalters, and liturgies is one of the most comprehensive private collections in the country, with over 3,400 volumes. In 1999 his personal paraphrase of the Psalms, The Psalter for Christian Worship, was published by the Office of Theology and Worship of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
